Zine Making with Woodnook Primary School
Share
On the 24th February 2026, I worked with HaworthArt Gallery to teach an art workshop at Woodnook Primary School with their Year 4 students. The workshop was part of their Art Week, and the studentshad chosen the theme of ‘Sketching’ and ‘About Me’.
The Session started with a game called the ‘Exquisite Corpse’, where you draw a body part, fold it over and pass it on to the next person. At the end you’re left with a funny looking character.

We then moved onto the next task, I showed the students how to fold a zine using one piece of paper. Making eight separate sections. Then using a timer and mirrors for each student, we began a blind contour portrait.
There’s two rules to a blind contour portrait. One, no looking at the paper, and two, no taking your pen off the paper. We did two of these 5 minute drawings and then moved onto drawing our faces with simple basic shapes.
At the end, I asked the students to fill in the rest of the pages with drawings and writing about them. This could be pictures of their hobbies, pets and family.

Each student then took this back to their class to present to their parents with their other work at the end of the week.
The students were amazing, listening to every word and gave the tasks a good go. I look forward to working with this class again.
